Proposed changes to the Financial Requirement for Family Visas.

Family migration minimum income

The Home Office is proposing to raise the Family Migration Minimum Income limit from £18,600 to £38,700 from Spring 2024. This means that people wishing to bring family members will need to earn at least £38,700 to be apply. The Home Office have stated that:

  • Those who already have a family visa within the five-year partner route, or who apply before the minimum income threshold is raised, will continue to have their applications assessed against the current income requirement and will not be required to meet the increased threshold. This will also be the case for children seeking to join or accompany parents.

  • Anyone granted a fianc(é)e visa before the minimum income threshold is raised will also be assessed against the current income requirement when they apply for a family visa within the five-year partner route.

  • Those already in the UK on a different route who apply to switch into the five-year partner route, after the minimum income requirement has been increased, will be subject to the new income requirement.

On 21 December 2023, the Home Office published a follow-up announcement with some revisions to their new immigration rules to come into effect in Spring 2024 (announced on 04 December 2023). The most significant of these updates is a change to the planned increase to the minimum income requirement for a spouse visa to £29,000 . The government's intention is to still eventually raise the threshold to £38,700 to be in line with the new minimum general salary threshold for Skilled Workers as of April 2024.

If you are thinking of making an application soon, then you should seek advice from an Immigration Advisor to assess whether you will meet the proposed new requirements or whether an alternative route might be appropriate.
